What Do Wiccan Believe?

Wicca is seriously misunderstood belief system that, despite its Pagan connections, is really less than one hundred years old. Its believers are not witches and, despite popular belief, do not worship the devil.

Modern Wiccan philosophy is based the writings of British author Gerald Gardner. Gardner wrote the seminal Wiccan Book of Shadows in the 1940’s to help pull together the practices of his coven. At its simplest, this group believes in a duo theistic worldview where the Mother Goddess and the Horned God balance each other out in an approximation of calm and storm. (It should be noted that the Horned God is not satan.)

The practice of Wiccan philosophies does involve a certain manipulation of natural forces through ritualistic practices. Wiccan supplies for these rituals usually include candles and small figurines to represent the two main spiritual forces in nature.

Perhaps the biggest myth regarding Wiccan is that they worship the devil. This misunderstanding stems from their frequent use of the five sided pentagram. And while others associate this with satanism, Wiccan see each point on the star as the representation of a natural force.

At its core, the Wiccan faith is vehicle for bringing its adherents closer to the earth and other natural forces. There’s really nothing evil about them at all.
